TUKUR MUNTARI writes on the recent destruction of many farms in Kano State by flood and the concern of farmers about imminent poor harvests this year When flood ravaged many farmlands in the Bagwai L
ocal Government Area of Kano State on August 9, 2020, the fear of imminent poor harvests and food scarcity was not limited to the farmers alone, but people all over the state.
The Executive Secretary, SEMA, Sale Jili, who made the revelation, said the downpour destroyed the farm produce in six villages of the local government area.Jili said the agency had already carried out on the spot assessment of the destroyed farmlands, adding that the farm produce destroyed included maize, onion, sesame, millet, grains and cotton, among others.
The executive secretary said the agency’s personnel were still compiling reports of the destroyed farmlands and gave an assurance that a comprehensive report would be produced for onward submission to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency for immediate assistance to the victims, especially those who lost their houses to the disaster.
He called on the government at both federal and state levels to come to the aid of the affected farmers as the local government council could not shoulder the responsibility due to the magnitude of the disaster. According to Sani, some of the farmlands were submerged by water, while others were completely washed away by the flood.
