If Disney makes a live-action Little Mermaid 2, the movie has to be different from a remake of the 2000 animated sequel Return to the Sea.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid generated so much buzz that it's only natural there is speculation about a sequel, but if it ends up coming to fruition, the movie can't remake the animated follow-up. Although it received mixed results at the box office, the 2023 Little Mermaid is still considered to be one of Disney's best live-action remakes, and it saw much success when released on streaming.

While there has not been any official confirmation regarding a live-action Little Mermaid 2, the first film's director did provide a hopeful comment. Before the release of the 2023 remake, Rob Marshall said Little Mermaid sequels are possible, explaining that it's a "classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories... I think there's always opportunities to find stories within stories.

While the 1988 original ranks high among all of Disney's animated features, its sequel is one of the studio's less popular films. Therefore, having the latter inspire the story for the second live-action Little Mermaid movie could allow for it to have a second chance. However, the need to wait enough years for Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King to look old enough to take on these mature roles is not ideal.

The Little Mermaid's Ending Sets Up A Better Sequel Than Return To The Sea The 2023 Little Mermaid remake ending sees Ariel and Eric getting ready to embark on a new adventure together and explore uncharted waters on a ship. This sets up an even better sequel than The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, as viewers did not get to experience Ariel and Eric's dynamic much in the first movie.
