It would have been an awkward addition to any TV show

To badly bastardise the words of Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Spores, spores everywhere and not a drop of a vaccine. That’s the main issue facing the human race in; trying to survive in a dystopian world in which a fungus, called 'cordyceps', has wormed its way into the human body, turning people into crazed zombie killers and killing off 60 per cent of the population.

In the hugely successful video game, launched in 2013, these spores were airborne. If you breathed in infected air of those suffering, there’s a good chance you would catch it too. However, in the series, this is one important factor that has been changed, and fans were quick to pick up on it. Writing on

Reddit page one person commented: “I did find the spores to be a really unique aspect of the cordyceps fungi, and the overall infected in the universe. It separatedfrom a lot of other zombie media,” while another added: “I hate this change. I know I'm speaking too soon, but I hate it.”But, there was good rationale behind the screen adaptation ditching the breathable aspect of the infection.

So while we’ve been spared the Darth Vader-like noises from the actors in masks, the only nervous heavy breathing you’ll be troubled by in the series is your own.
