One of the great survivors of the Conservative Party, Mr Shapps had served as the constituency MP since 2005

A veteran of successive governments and a trusted media performer and Tory attack dog, he has served in six Cabinet roles under four different prime ministers over the last 14 years.

During David Cameron’s coalition Government with the Liberal Democrats, he was promoted from Housing Minister to Co-Chair of the Tory party and minister without portfolio.But in a Cabinet reshuffle after Mr Cameron won an outright majority in the 2015 election, he was demoted to International Development Minister.

Grant Shapps with David Cameron at the Conservative party conference in September 2014 Often seen as an effective communicator, he was prominent on the media rounds during the Covid pandemic, cementing his place as one of the most experienced operators in Westminster.In a 2023 Cabinet mini-reshuffle, the Sunak loyalist moved from the position of Energy Secretary and was promoted to Defence Secretary, a role he succeeded Ben Wallace in.

He also helped bring down three Conservative prime ministers, criticising Liz Truss’s “lamentable” economic policy after her controversial mini-budget sparked a bond market rout and sent the cost of mortgages soaring.
