OPINION: Teach your child life skills this period
If there is one thing many children will take away from this current situation, it’s that life is undoubtedly unpredictable. Irrespective of the age or maturity, every child has one way or another been affected by this situation and the many limitations too. The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche said, “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.
Time is no longer an excuse to ignore your child who wants to know more than the ordinary or has become too confused and scared to ask. This is the time to encourage your children to use their voices and ask questions no matter how irrelevant they sound. Be willing to listen and start a conversation.
But you certainly want them to know that despite the uncertainties in life, they can always use their voice to talk through every tough situation they may find themselves. As many family’s lives has been torn apart by this pandemic, the pains will linger in the hearts of their friends and loved ones for ever. The importance of compassion cannot be overemphasised as it brings a sense of comfort in the awful feeling of pain which can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
One of the most valuable lessons many families will learn is prudence if they have had to cut cost and made quick adjustments. Teach your children the act of being prudent and the importance of saving. Start making easy adjustments at home and look at ways they can all help to reduce excesses.
