Unexpected advance towards Aleppo aims to capitalise on increased pressure on Damascus
Syrian Islamist rebels have launched their biggest offensive in years against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, capturing at least 15 villages and killing a senior Iranian commander as they surged towards the city of Aleppo. In the first serious challenge for four years to Assad and his backers, Russia and Iran, militants advanced eastward from the remaining Syrian opposition-held region of Idlib, which has been in a state of stalemate since Moscow and Ankara agreed a ceasefire in 2020.
For the Syrian rebels, “this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, said Dareen Khalifa, a Syria expert at Crisis Group.
