“In FEMA search and rescue , there are live find dogs and there are human remains detection dogs,” said Swayze ’s handler, Cait Clawson , a volunteer with Utah’s Task Force 1. Swayze is a human remains detection dog, also known as a Cadaver dog, called upon when a rescue-effort-turns-recovery, like in the case of the deadly wildfire in Maui that killed over 100 people.
“In the recent decade or so, they decided that they needed more human remains dogss just because a lot of disasters have been recovery only,” Clawson said. The gravity of this type of work is certainly felt, but Clawson reminded herself that they are helping in the ways they have been trained. “It’s kind of bittersweet when we find people, because that means someone passed, but we did our job, and we are able to bring that peace to people,” she said.“They can smell a drop of blood on a football field,” Clawson said. “I can’t find the human. My dog is finding them because their nose is so much better than ours, which is part of why I love it, because you are helping people with dogs.”
