It's an Australian icon, more suited to the bush than the burbs. But yesterday evening in Eight Mile Plains, locals saw the extraordinary - an Emu running down the street! 9News

Andrew and his daughter followed in their car. While others were forced to hit the brakes, as the Emu ran between the footpath and the road.

"I went around the corner and saw this emu, out of nowhere,” said resident Hoang Hyunh who captured the native bird on his dashcam.Luckily, an off-duty RSPCA officer was able to help catch the big bird. "We ended up having him cornered to a point, backed him into one of us, and then yeah, grabbed him,” Mr Cowles said. The irony lost, on his seven-year-old daughter, Lucy.Wrapped in a blanket, the big bird was taken to the RSPCA at Wacol, where scans revealed it needed emergency surgery.

“Quite concerning because they do have pointy ends, they’re roofing nails, some screws, some bolts,” RSPCA’s Sheila Collecott said.Investigators believe the Emu, a natural forager, ate them while being illegally kept in a Sunnybank backyard. "They are native, and they are wildlife. They should be wild and not in our backyards, as a captive animal,” Ms Collecott said.© Nine Digital Pty Ltd 2019
