“Not only did he come to his safe place, we were thinking he was going to have to leave again,” Crowell’s daughter Julie Amiro says. Thankfully, it didn’t come to that. On Oct. 11, pulp manufacturer Paper Excellence Canada announced a $175,000 contribution to support the ongoing recovery efforts for individuals, families, and communities in Shelburne and Barrington affected by the wildfires.
“The wildfires of June 2023 were incredibly devastating for many Nova Scotians and left numerous families with damaged and destroyed homes,” says Jean-Francois Guillot, Chief Operating Officer of Paper Excellence Canada. “We are hopeful that our contribution and the support of our partners will offer reprieve to those families most impacted.”“Companies are made of people,” he says. “It’s easy for companies to say I’ll donate money to the Red Cross. Then your job is done.
One day a friend suggested with the encroaching smoke and falling ashes, they might want to leave ahead of an official evacuation order. They packed up some things and their house pets and left. They stayed in a hotel in Yarmouth. The family has farm animals so the police escorted them back in one day so they could try to rescue a pig and a couple of other animals.
Even after being brought under control hotspots continued to burn. On July 26, the fire was reported to be officially out.
