A general practitioner, Dr Opeyemi Emoruwa, speaks about the causes and management of stroke in this interview withA stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident, is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is disrupted. This can be caused by a clot blocking a blood vessel in the brain, or by a blood vessel rupturing and bleeding into the brain.
High levels of cholesterol can clog arteries and increase the risk of a blood clot forming, which can lead to a stroke. Being overweight can increase the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, which are all risk factors for stroke. Lack of physical activity can increase the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity, which are all risk factors for stroke.
The risk of developing a stroke increases with age. Men are more likely than women to have a stroke. Some studies have shown that certain racial and ethnic groups may be at higher risk for stroke compared to others. For example, Africans, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans have a higher risk of stroke than white Americans.
If you suspect that someone is experiencing a stroke, it is important to act quickly and call emergency medical services. Time is of the essence when it comes to treating stroke, as prompt treatment can help to minimise brain damage and increase the chances of a full recovery.
