Award-winning director and producer, Imoh Umoren, tells NOAH BANJO about his journey as a filmmaker and the future of cinema in NigeriaI think growing up was a bit of a mix. I don’t think I had enough of it because my parents died too early. I grew up most of my life as an orphan, but I had a good time. I had two sisters. My mother was a university lecturer, while my father was a politician and businessman.
While my father was more of a capitalist, my mother had socialist leanings. They used to have debates about society and different things. It was hilarious growing up. My father was a very funny man and the opposite of my mum. Growing up with them was a learning process for me and I value the short time I spent with them. It still hurts sometimes, especially when you’re achieving more with your life and you want to show off to your parents and they’re not there.
Personally, I learnt self respect from my mother and hard work from my father. My father was a very hard-working man, who was literally self-made, whereas my mum was a more composed lady.It was tough because we were all very young when they died. We were in our early teens, yet I had to look out for my sisters, pay their rent, and handle other things. I had to start working from the university, so that my sisters would have a house because they couldn’t live with me.
It is hilarious. I never wanted to be a director. The seed was sown when as a kid, I watched a tragic Indian film titled, Teri Meherbaniyan. It was about how a dog avenged its master’s death and I remember being so sad about the film. My mum then asked me what I would like to do about the film and I replied that I would have liked to change the ending of the film. As I grew older, I realised that I liked to control the narrative. My mum used to borrow books for me from the library.
