John Alechenu examines the decision of the All Progressives Congress to disqualify Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting the Edo State governorship primary amid growing security concerns It is no l
onger news that the All Progressives Congress Screening Committee for the Edo State governorship primary has declared Governor Godwin Obaseki ineligible to contest.
Neither Oshiomhole nor his supporters appear to have glossed over speculations that the governor was the brains behind a recent failed attempt to force the chairman out of office. Obaseki’s supporters have however denied this allegation, arguing that Oshiomhole’s leadership style put him at odds with members of the party at various levels. After initial denials of a rift between the two, Obaseki removed the cloak of secrecy.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, last week echoed the fears being expressed by political pundits when he reiterated the growing concerns about the drums of war being sounded by major actors in the run-up to the Edo State governorship primary of the APC, slated for June 22, 2020.
Fears that the forthcoming APC primary in the state would likely be violent were further heightened by the series of suspected arson attacks on markets and other public buildings in Benin City, the state capital, in the last couple of months. Also, at the outset of the Fourth Republic in 1999, one-time governors of Borno and Anambra states, the late Mala Kachalla and Chinwoke Mbadinuju, respectively, lost their bids for a second term after falling out with their political benefactors.
Also, former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, dumped the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party and formed the Progressive People Alliance and won the 2007 governorship election. The Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee of the APC had agreed on the direct mode of primary for the governorship election, a decision the Obaseki camp had rejected.
