of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, last week gathered in Abeokuta, the state capital, in celebration of the spinal cord injury awareness month.
She narrated, “For the past 16 years, I have always been in a wheelchair except for the times I was wheeled to crusades or deliverance programmes. The financial burden on a spinal cord injury person is heavy and it consumes time. Since I have been in a wheelchair, I have spent millions of naira because I also go to the hospital for medical care. Sometimes, I might be ill and so on.
He said, “I was taken to a nearby hospital and it was there that I was diagnosed with spinal cord damage. I have been on it since then, I have been to eight different hospitals in Nigeria. Anu described her ordeal as tough since 2017 when her spinal cord was affected while returning from a job interview.
Kareem said the incident not only crippled his spinal cord but also rendered his hands and legs numb. For 49-year-old policeman, Nambat Nekpenekpen, his spinal cord injury had gulped N5m since 2019 when it happened.
