Clarke was seen remonstrating with his set piece coach after a second half routine went badly wrong against Germany.
The Scotland set piece coach felt his boss' wrath after a particularly inept free-kick routine left Clarke fizzing. Chasing the game in the second half at 4-0 down, a chance to put the ball in the German box was ditched in favour of playing short, which allowed Julian Nagelsmann's side to win possession and launch another counter attack Scotland managed to survive.
The cameras caught Clarke turning to MacPhee with his arms outstretched in exasperation, asking his set piece guru why he'd seen what he'd just seen. As the game ticked towards stoppage time, Andy Robertson used a similar opportunity to send in a cross, that eventually saw Scott McKenna's header diverted into his own net by Antonio Rudiger for a consolation.
When asked about it in his pre-match briefing, Clarke took umbrage with the question and spikily answereed that he couldn't even remember the exchange. he said: "Is that a serious question? We're fine," he said. "I don't even remember it, we're fine. It's emotional on the touchline." Asked if this was the toughest night of his Scotland tenure, Clarke was only slightly less tetchy, responding: "I've had tough nights before, I'll get over it. I've never ever doubted my players."
