At its peak, 20,000 to 40,000 people would be part of the annual Whit Walks
The annual event has traditionally involved children wearing their Sunday best clothes, carrying flowers or ribbons attached to banners alongside church officers and clergy, often accompanied by brass bands.
The event started as a way of keeping child mill workers away from drinking and gambling, by way of a 'procession of witness' as a public declaration of faith.
