President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State has ignited nationwide controversy, with critics accusing him of unconstitutional overreach and political bias.
The Coalition of United Political Parties warned that the move could plunge Nigeria into a deeper constitutional crisis. CUPP National Secretary High Chief Peter Ameh condemned the move, stating, “This is not just about Rivers State; it is about the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the protection of democracy. If this unlawful act is not challenged, we risk creating a culture of impunity where elected officials are removed at will.
CUPP called on Nigerians to resist any attempts to undermine democracy and urged legal institutions to act swiftly in defending constitutional order. “The ball is now in the court of the judiciary and the Nigerian people. Will we stand up for our democracy, or will we watch as it is eroded by those sworn to protect it? The choice is ours,” Ameh stated.
