Understanding this less formal side of Brussels is critical for those hoping to move the politics of the city
Keeping Brussels in the dark is one thing, but Starmer is now spooking the very people who’d once hoped they’d be consulted on what a reset should look like and how it might be achieved.they now believe the Government’s ambitions to be far less expansive than previously hoped.
Many of those who Starmer and co had previously turned to for advice say contact has been significantly reduced since Labour entered power. It’s not merely that Starmer and his government are yet to articulate what they want from a reset or how they see the relationship in any broader context. Frustrating as that is to Brexit watchers, there is at least a reasonable explanation.
While EU officials would never publicly admit it, understanding this less formal side of Brussels is critical for those hoping to move the politics of the city. Outside of the treaties signed between the two parties, there is no formal reset process in place. Unlike with Brexit, there are no formal talks that will guide both parties through anything like Article 50, leading to the ultimate exit of a member state.
That means it’s a good time to make sense of the relationships between member states, the institutions, groups in Parliament and any potential new factions in the Commission. But even the Brits in Brussels are no longer well placed to make sense of EU politics these days.
