On May 7, 2022, fully kitted in a police uniform and brandishing an AK-47 rifle, a corporal, Isaac Mathew, attached to the Ebonyi State Police Command, was filmed singing the praises of an individual. The act earned the cop a demotion.

Nwanguma, who is also the coordinator, Lagos State Stakeholders’ Forum on Police Accountability, noted that the majority of the people being recruited into the Force were unfit and untrainable.

Nwanguma added that the reluctance to enforce regulations enabled officers to continue their mannerless ways. “If an officer was seen praising a cult group, it means he’s also a member. The recruitment system needs to be looked into. This will reduce the number of untrainable officers, and it’ll also reduce the number of criminals and cultists finding their way into the police,” he stated.

“Character is a problem, the police as an institution failed in doing background checks and people of questionable character. People whose characters have not been properly moulded from the formative years to their years in various institutions joined the police.” In his view, the Lagos State Police Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that people were unrealistic about the expectations they have of the police which was impossible anywhere in the world and in any area of human endeavour.
