Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Every day on their way to the locker room, Amerks players walk past a stairwell.
A stairwell leading to the Rochester Amerks locker room at the Blue Cross Arena is adorned of photos of players who have played for both the Amerks and Buffalo Sabres. "The weight room, the video room and the shooting room are in the dungeon," coach Seth Appert said. "They're downstairs, where it's hard work."There are also names, along with pictures, of players who have played for Amerks and the Sabres.
"Jody Gage is up there, Doug Houda, guys like that, Pominville, Vanek, Miller," he continued. "There's some great players.""Quinn, Peterka, Krebs, Sammy, Upi, guys like that that have lived this life here," Appert said. The names and photos are something Appert just put up this offseason — to show that, while every player has their own path, "They know they're knocking on the door of being NHL players.
The jump from the AHL to the NHL can feel massive, so that hallway, those pictures and those stairs are extra motivation — and maybe a friendly reminder to tell the guys they're just a few steps away.
