President of the African National Congress Cyril Ramaphosa adresses members of parliament after he was announced President of South Africa after members of parliament voted during the first sitting of the New South African Parliament in Cape Town on June 14, 2024.
Lawmakers in Cape Town voted overwhelmingly on Friday to put Ramaphosa, 71, back in office for another five years after the May 29 general election produced no outright winner. The party that led the anti-apartheid struggle won only 40 percent of the vote and, for the first time, lost its absolute majority in parliament.“This is a historic juncture in the life of our country, which requires that we must work and act together,” Ramaphosa said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Ramaphosa, hailing South Africa’s “joint efforts to restore just peace in Ukraine.” EFF members took the oath wearing red overalls and in some cases rubber boots and plastic construction worker helmets. Graft-tainted former president Jacob Zuma’s new party uMkhonto weSizwe , which came third in the election, has disputed the results and its MPs boycotted Friday’s sitting.
