Imagine coming down to a state in the extreme Northwest, sharing borders with Niger Republic amid scorching sun and harsh weather, to serve your fatherland, but in the end, what you are rewarded with is ingratitude by the state government.
Sir: This is the true picture of the travail of youth corps members serving in Sokoto State.
While many states truly committed to the welfare of their corps members pay them a token every month as state allowance, the Sokoto State government accumulates hers and pays a total amount of N50,000 at the end of the service year. You may think this is brilliant and helpful for corps members until you understand the politics played with the money.
Yet, the state will still not pay before the POP date. By this time, corps members, many of whom are already longing to go home would have been frustrated. So, many of them leave the state unpaid. Those who remain banking on the promise will spend weeks, if not months before getting their pay. Presently, as typical of the state government, Batch B1 corps members’ details were collected at the dying minute. To this day, they have not been paid. These are people who have passed out since last month. Some of them are still hanging around in the state, incurring unnecessary expenses, hoping they would be paid. It’s our prayer that they will not suffer similar fate with their predecessors. While many have since left with dashed hopes.
