At the last count, 53 lives were lost in Sokoto State to gastroenteritis, cholera and the latest being food poisoning. After the first deaths in the state, Governor Aminu Tambuwal attributed them to ‘strange disease.’ Cholera claimed four at the time and 24 were hospitalised at Helele area of the state.

The statement noted “It has come to the notice of the government that the strange sickness has claimed four lives, three within the Helele community and one on admission in the hospital. Twenty four other people are currently receiving medical attention in different health facilities in Sokoto.

The state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hajia Kulu Abubakar said, “When the ministry got wind of the outbreak of the disease, we immediately contacted the ministry of health, and the timely intervention of the ministry manifested in reducing the death rate, else it could have been more than two.

Within one week, the state government confirmed the death of 47 people.
