A retired Professor of Journalism, Idowu Sobowale, has charged political leaders on sustainability of democracy and adherence to rule of law.

He made appeal at the weekend during the 18th Adekunle Kukoye memorial lecture with the theme, ‘2023 General Election: Whither Nigeria?’ organised by the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors .

“Many atrocities are permitted in the name of those in authority without their knowledge and it is the same reason the leaders do not enunciate policies and implement programmes that favour the majority,” he observed. He said politicians don’t mind stepping on people’s rights to win elections or get appointed. Sobowale regretted that those paid to maintain law and order are same persons violating the law and abusing innocents. The don noted: “Some of the bold pronouncements by the courts have curbed the impunity of government’s functionaries.”He, therefore, urged lawyers and professionals to be more involved by providing interpretations to government policies for meaningful living.
