Slouching could actually be good for your back and keep your spine ‘intact’
SLOUCHING is a habit many of us are guilty of, and may have been trying to correct since our desk-bound school days.
And our dedication to avoiding the unhealthy consequences has seen us spend billions of pounds a year on posture-correcting chairs, slouching apps and even specialist clothing. The study by physiotherapists at the University Hospital of North Tees in Durham concluded that some slouching can 'provide a valuable alternative to sitting upright'.
In fact, trying to sit as we've always been told, with feet flat on the floor and a straight back, can cause tension in the middle of the spine, and worse, breathing problems over time. Australian researchers found that combining slouching with sitting straight was better than staying in one position for the whole day, using a variety of different muscles to encourage stability.
