Six wedding guests, at the weekend, escaped death by whiskers when an event centre collapsed in Ijero Ekiti, Ijero Local Council of Ekiti State.
The victims, however, sustained injuries in the incident. The Guardian learnt that the roof and walls of the building christened F and G Event Centre, located along Ijero-Ido Ekiti road, came down at about 4:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has warned that the state would not tolerate incidents of building collapse. Oyebanji, who visited the site, and Ijero General Hospital, where victims were receiving treatments, yesterday, said the incident was disturbing and saddening. Represented by his Deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, the governor said the incident could have been averted, if proper building scrutiny and compliance with specifications were carried out by government agencies, warning that situations like that shouldn’t be allowed to reoccur in the state.
