In recent times, many people have travelled abroad to study or gone in search of a better life. Going abroad for a better future and or to educate oneself is a commendable thing. However, those living with sickle cell sometimes do not take time to consider what life would be like for them abroad. The fact is if you are in your thirties and above, and have sickle cell, you already know how to manage your life and most especially your health.

In some countries, like the US, going to the hospital costs money. Being taken to hospital by an ambulance could cost thousands of dollars. Surely, one did not bring one’s money to start spending on ambulance or hospital bills.

There is also the stress of the weather. Emigrating to a country such as Canada is a tough one for anyone living with sickle cell. Of course, there are people living with sickle cell disease in Canada. But they understand the climate and know how to manage themselves. Living in a country where the weather drops to minus zero is a tough one for anyone with sickle cell. Even countries in Europe, equally have this severe weather that sickle cell does not like one bit.

One of the solutions is dressing warm and knowing what to wear. Some people think wearing a thick cardigan will do the trick; not it would not. What one needs to do is to layer up, so that the cold will have to pass through layers before getting to once skin. It is also important to wear woolly clothing. It is also vital to keep one’s head, neck, hands/fingers and feet warm and covered too. And as much as you can, try to drink warm drinks.
