The Opposition leader has applauded the MH17 investigation but strongly condemned Russia’s Vladimir Putin for stripping Australian families of real justice.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by Russian-made missiles over eastern Ukraine eight years ago and killed 298 people - 80 children - from 17 countries including Australia, Malaysia, the UK and Belgium.

The two Russians and one Ukrainian were identified as being responsible for the deaths of 298 people, including 38 Australians. A third Russian suspect was acquitted. “Russian missile batteries do not cross borders by accident. It only happens if the Russian leader provides that authorisation,” Mr Abbott told Sky News host Chris Kenny. Mr Abbott says Mr Putin “really does have to accept responsibility, apologise, pay reparations to the families”. The court found the men shot down the aircraft with a Russian-made surface-to-air BUK missile – launched from the separatist region of eastern Ukraine in 2014. The men were also ordered to pay $25 million in compensation to the victims' families.
