Shoprite, a major retail chain in Lagos, has become the first prominent supermarket to implement the Lagos state government's upcoming ban on single-use plastics. The ban, set to begin on January 1, 2025, aims to reduce plastic waste and promote a healthier environment.
The Lagos state government's move to ban single-use plastics, which starts on January 1, 2025, has already seen its first major retail implementation. Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for environment, said this initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable plastic waste management and create a healthier and safer environment. Customers visiting the Shoprite outlet in Surulere on Monday were greeted with a public notice at the entrance, clearly outlining the new policy.
The notice stated that the supermarket would no longer be providing plastic straws, cutleries, or styrofoam packs to reduce plastic waste. 'In support of the Lagos state government's ban on single-use plastic starting 1 January 2025, we will no longer provide these items in our stores — plastic straws, plastic cutleries and styrofoam packs,' the notice explained. 'Let's reduce plastic waste and protect our environment. You can help by bringing your reusable bags.' Shoppers were given the option to either use empty cartons provided by the store or purchase reusable customized bags for N500. While some customers opted for the reusable bags, others chose to utilize shopping trolleys to transport their goods to their vehicles.A staff member at the retail store reported that customers have generally been complying with the changes, with no significant issues or altercations arising from the new policy so far. The early implementation by Shoprite, a popular supermarket chain, is seen as a significant step towards achieving the Lagos state government's goal of reducing plastic waste and promoting a more sustainable environment
