Social activist and a former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has lambasted the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN) for demanding the sum of N250billion from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Nigerian government for transportation of their petroleum products.
Senator Sani who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly noted that even the oil producing communities in the Niger Delta region of the country do not see or get the amount of money the oil marketers are demanding from the Nigerian government.
The marketers reportedly said that as a result of the unpaid N250 billion, many of its members were running out of business, which could consequently lead to fuel scarcity in some parts of the country. The Secretary of the marketers’ forum, Jarma Mustapha, was quoted as saying, “We have outstanding bridging claims up to the day when the end of the deregulation was announced by the new President. As the new deregulation regime started now, we are faced with difficulties such as lack of capacity, and lack of capital to continue our business because most of our capital was hanged with the defunct Petroleum Equalization Fund.
“Today, the capital you need to have one truck of the product before has multiplied by four to have the same number of trucks today. You paid NO million to purchase one truck of petroleum, now you will need N27 million to buy one truck.
