Until four years ago, Shola, a software developer, had a bustling startup in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.
A graduate of computer science from one of the private universities in Ogun State, he was snapping up jobs worth between N350, 000 and N2m from clients that needed his services.
“My company was badly affected by the recession and it was more painful because I never saw it coming,” the entrepreneur said in a chat with“I ought to know that when most of my clients were getting out of business because of an economic condition, one would also gradually be getting out of business,” he added.
Like Shola, life was not also that good to Winifred. In 2012 after waiting for seven years to marry her fiancé, simply identified as Ben, she got the shock of her life. All this period, Winifred was still hopeful and believed that the relationship would lead to marriage. Even when her family and friends advised her to end it since it seemed it was heading nowhere, she still believed in Ben. She said, “He said he would return to marry me if I couldn’t join him in the UK by the end of 2011,” she said, “not knowing he had married a White lady since 2010.”
Few days after she was discharged from the hospital, Winifred said she called Ben to congratulate him on his wedding, which he tried to deny.Thankfully, Winnifred said she got a new lover two years after the episode and married in 2015. She toldshe was now a happy woman because “I have a great husband, a fulfilling career and a son.”It has always been said that life is full of crises, and according to psychologists and life coaches, many people don’t survive a crash when it comes.
The late English poet, Alexander Pope , famously said, “Blessed is he who expects nothing for he shall never be disappointed.” He, therefore, encouraged people to learn how to manage their expectations by always thinking that things could go the other way round.Take a moment to wallow “Feelings are real and important to recognise, but thoughts are not always the truth. When the initial upset is over, try to look objectively at your problems to help separate fact from fiction and reduce negative self-talk.”Life coach, Pastor Olumide Adebola, said disappointment was not a time to think all was over, saying there had been cases of people who rose up again after being beaten by life’s crises.
