Serena Williams is OUT at the AusOpen. Pete_Borkowski breaks down the match.
Williams was upset in the third round by 27th seed Qiang Wang of China in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 , 7-5.
The loss comes as a shock as Williams came into Melbourne having won her first title since the 2017 Australian Open two weeks ago in Auckland. It was her first tournament win since giving birth in September 2017. Wang broke Williams’s serve at 4-4 in the opening set which she took 6-4. She then broke midway through the second set and served for the match at 5-4. However, Williams would rally to break serve for the first time in the match to level the set at 5-5 before taking it in a tiebreak.
Williams was attempting to tie Margaret Court’s record for most all-time Grand Slam singles titles with 24. Williams is 0-4 in major finals since the 2017 Australian Open.
