Sentencing date finally set for conman charged a decade ago yyc
Crown and defence lawyers appeared before Justice Lloyd Robertson on Thursday to schedule Oct. 23, for the judge’s decision on a suitable punishment for Aitkens.The Calgary Court of Justice judge convicted Aitkens, 68, on July 20, 2020, of two charges under the provincial act, including fraud over his dealings with investors in Legacy Communities Inc.
Robertson found Aitkens committed fraud under the act in connection with a real estate project in which nearly 1,500 investors forked over more than $35 million.Last month Crown prosecutor Peter Hurich and defence lawyer Brian Beresh provided sentencing submissions, leaving just Robertson’s decision to complete the matter at the trial level.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
