The Senate Public Accounts Committee has expressed serious concerns over the non-appearance of several revenue-generating agencies before the committee to address audit queries. The committee plans to report the heads of these agencies to President Bola Tinubu for disciplinary action.
The Senate Public Accounts Committee has expressed deep concern over the consistent failure of certain revenue-generating agencies to respond to expenditure queries raised by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAGF). The committee, led by Chairman Aliyu Wadada, emphasized the importance of these agencies accounting for the funds appropriated by the National Assembly, as this aligns with legislative provisions that empower Parliament to conduct oversight responsibilities.
According to Mr. Wadada, the auditor-general's report, submitted to the committee, revealed significant queries regarding the expenditure of several agencies. Among the agencies cited for failing to appear before the committee to address the audit queries are: the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), among others. Mr. Wadada stated that the Senate would report the heads of these agencies to President Bola Tinubu after providing them with another opportunity to respond to the queries. The committee chairman highlighted specific instances of financial irregularities, including the CBN's debiting of the consolidated revenue funds account and crediting the treasury single account, totaling over N30 trillion. He also pointed out instances where interest charges were incorrectly applied to the treasury account instead of being charged to the consolidated revenue funds account, accumulating to over N6 trillion. Mr. Wadada expressed frustration with the agencies' evasive responses and the faulty documentation provided, stating that correspondences between the committee, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and the Debt Management Office (DMO) had been unsuccessful in obtaining satisfactory explanations. He further revealed that the Nigeria Satellite Communications Limited had been invited nine times but failed to appear, joining the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority in their failure to cooperate with the committee's investigation
