Some Nigerian security experts are urging caution in the agitation for a change of guards in the armed forces. But the National Association of Polytechnic Students , on Friday gave President Muhammadu Buhari a 14-day-ultimatum to replace the service chiefs or face their wrath.

“As regards handling the insecurity in the land, we must be truthful in admitting our failures and humble enough to seek for foreign assistance. This ‘we can do it Sir’ syndrome needs to stop. The 9,000 strong ECOWAS Standby Brigade Force was envisaged to tackle such trouble but typically the initiative was dead on arrival.”

“So such murky darkness does not allow the military to have its normal clout, stability and the power they need to push. All of these things are the bedevilling effects on the capacity and capability of the military. And I am sure that by the time these guys are told to go and take a rest, it will still take some time to repair what is being damaged right now. Thank God I am already a veteran.”

“In the military, one person cannot do it all. If the soldiers are in bad shape or not in the right mind or something is wrong with them, it goes a way to affect their performance. There is a major problem of cohesion and unitary action. There is so much polarization in the country. People are not patriotic.

“ They are now bereft of new ideas, hence they should give way to new ones with new ideas, zeal and vigour.” Speaking in Osogbo, Yahasalam said: ”Although, members of the National Assembly have the statutory mandate to take position on issues of national interest through their overview function, their assessment of the scope of insurgency and the whole security architecture at the front line shows that many things are not clear to them.

Also, the Olowu of Kuta in Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Adekunle Oyelude Makama, Tegbosin II, said sacking the service chiefs will not end insurgency in the country. Executive Director, CODWA, Taiwo Otitolaye, said the security challenges appeared to have overwhelmed the security chiefs.
