The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, Hashim Abioye has warned that the scrapping of state electoral commissions for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct local government elections in Nigeria would lead to regret.

Abioye gave this warning while featuring on a programme organised by the League of Veteran Journalists, in Osogbo on Wednesday. The OSSIEC chairman said the federal government had been so overburdened that it was leaving the state with little or nothing to deal with. He said, “If you say INEC or another agency should come and conduct the LG election, we will all sit down and blame ourselves for it.

So, all funds given to a local government should go directly without first landing in the purse of an agent or a middleman. That is just the decision of the Supreme Court. “But, how would they spend the funds? I heard that some people living abroad have been saying that it is time to come home to become the chairman of their LGs because of financial autonomy.
