Scott Morrison cool on plan to offer safe haven from Hong Kong protests | CroweDM

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has declared it "premature" to consider giving safe haven to 19,000 people from Hong Kong who currently reside in Australia, as he called on the Chinese government to show restraint with protesters.

Mr Morrison said it was "not for us" to tell other countries how to run their affairs but said he made no apology for raising concerns about "these issues" as Australians would expect. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged authorities to show restraint when dealing with protesters in Hong Kong.Hong Kong police have arrested hundreds of protesters, including pro-democracy leaders and some lawmakers, over three months of protests against plans for new laws that would give authorities the formal power to extradite people to mainland China.

"I think what we have to do in this situation, as I've said all along, is to remain calm. We're closely assessing the situation. The Foreign Minister has particularly been doing that. We're in regular contact with our consul general there in Hong Kong."Asked by 3AW radio host Neil Mitchell if he urged China to show restraint, Mr Morrison replied, "Of course".

Mr Morrison praised China for bringing millions of people out of poverty but said Australia was now dealing with a different China to the past, given it was a developed economy that had to play by "the same rules as everybody else" on trade, climate change and more."I don’t think that's fair," he said.
