School reopening: So God

The idea that government in Nigeria allows itself to be pressured into taking decisions it is not convinced about is very worrisome. And, let us be very clear about this: there is a difference between government listening to the voice of the people and government failing to stick by decisions that ultimately favour the people in deference to the loud voice of the majority of stakeholders.

Hear Adamu on that day: “Our schools will only open when we believe it is safe for our children and that is when the situation is right, not when the incidence of the infection is going up in the country. I just want to make it clear. I will also like to use this position to ask those states that have already announced, I will appeal to them. I think it is not safe. I feel responsible for all children, not just those who are in the Federal Government-controlled schools.

So, what has changed? Are there new scientific evidence suggesting that children cannot be infected with COVID-19, given that even national leaders choose to have meetings Is there any new knowledge as to the immunity of Nigerians to the deadly virus? Has the incidence of infection gone so low that the curve has flattened, and Nigeria can now go about their business without worry? Has the world found a cure? Has Nigeria’s testing capacity improved so significantly that we now know the status of...

While parents and some school owners may see no danger other than the extension of their children’s tenure in secondary school and the crippling of their investments, government, for a number of reasons, should have insisted on ensuring the safety of these children for so many reasons, some of which I will present hereby.
