Stakeholders in the athletics sector have blamed the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria after 10 Nigerian athletes were disqualified from competing at the Olympics for failing to undergo the three out-of-competition mandatory tests ahead of the Games, The PUNCH reports. On Wednesday, 10 Nigerian track and field athletes were disqualified following non-compliance with out-of-competition tests.
Former President of the AFN, Dan Ngerem, said the disqualification of the 10 athletes was shameful and a total gross of irresponsibility from the three bodies saddled with the responsibility of ensuring athletes are prepared for the Olympics.“From the federating unit to the Nigerian Olympic Committee that presents the athletes for the Games and the ministry of sports, this is total negligence. This is an elementary process that every country should put together, starting from their preparations.
“In an environment where you have divisions and dissonance within the federating unit, where they are in the Appeal Court and heading to the Supreme Court, it’s on them to sort out these fundamental issues for the love of the sport.”
