The Foundation for Rural Proletariat and Community Advancement (RuralPro Nigeria), with support from IRI Generation Democracy (GenDem), convened the Nigeria Youth Political Leadership Exchange Program (NYPLEP) Fireside Chat

The Foundation for Rural Proletariat and Community Advancement , with support from IRI Generation Democracy , convened the Nigeria Youth Political Leadership Exchange Program Fireside Chat on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. The event brought together emerging political leaders to discuss the barriers and opportunities for youth political participation in Nigeria, providing attendees with a global perspective on political leadership and facilitating cross-border knowledge exchange.

Feyijimi, who ran for office at the age of 25, encouraged voting based on principles rather than monetary incentives while recounting his experience of being arrested and mistreated by security forces on election day, an ordeal he viewed as an attempt to intimidate young political candidates. Hon. Alao-Akala highlighted the high costs of running for office and suggested that reducing these expenses would make political participation more accessible to young people.

Nikola Zirojević provided a comparative perspective by discussing Montenegro’s political landscape. He highlighted the national and religious divides that fuel polarization and deter young people from engaging in politics. Zirojević noted that young people often feel their votes do not matter and pointed out that social media frequently serves as a battleground for misinformation.
