The Benin royal family, on Monday, suspended one of its members, Professor Gregory Akenzua, for alleged acts of rebellion against the Benin Traditional Institution.
Akenzua, an uncle to the Oba of Benin and Enogie of the Evbo-Obanosa community in the Orhionmwon local government area of Edo State, is currently in court with the Benin Palace to seek legal redress over his suspension. Speaking on behalf of other members of the Royal family, Prince George Eweka said none of the royals should henceforth have any dealings with Prof. Akenzua as directed. Eweka said “Prof.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Royal Family wish to emphasise that His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin occupies a unique position as the father of every member of the Benin Royal Family irrespective of age. Hence the royal family doesn’t have an Okaegbe, like other families in Benin Kingdom but Odion Egbe who is required by tradition to defer to His Royal Majesty.
