Apparently baffled by the rate at which people die in road crashes along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced
The FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, said the State Sector Command of the corps is carrying out the operation in conjunction with the national headquarters.
According to Okpe, “recent road traffic crash statistics revealed that speed has been the major causative factor which results in death and severe injuries” along the corridor. As an organization saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the safety of lives on the road, Okpe stated that the FRSC deemed it necessary “to intensify the enforcement of speed limiter to some categories of vehicles” in order to control speed.
She urged motorists using the highway to comply with the stipulated speeds of 100km for cars; 90km for taxis and buses, 60km for tankers and trailers; and 45 Km for towing vehicles. The FRSC spokesperson advised motorists to desist from speeding, while charging them to always observe the average 50km speed at work zones and built-up areas.
