Following the Supreme Court's ruling that nullified last year's local government election, the Rivers State House of Assembly has directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the 2025 Appropriation Bill within 48 hours and announced plans to amend relevant laws.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill within 48 hours, citing the Supreme Court 's recent judgment that nullified last year's local government election . In a letter signed by Speaker Martin Amaewhule and addressed to Governor Fubara , the lawmakers also announced their intention to amend the Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018 and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Law No.
2 of 2018 to align with the Electoral Act. This directive follows a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, stemming from the falling out between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister. The crisis has fractured the legislature into two factions: 27 lawmakers loyal to Mr. Wike and four loyal to Mr. Fubara. The situation escalated in December 2023 when the pro-Wike lawmakers reportedly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to the declaration of their seats as vacant.Governor Fubara capitalized on this situation, presenting and assenting to the budget within 24 hours, prompting a legal challenge from Mr. Wike's allies. The ensuing legal battles culminated in the Supreme Court's Friday ruling in favor of the pro-Wike lawmakers. Governor Fubara, in a statewide broadcast, ordered council chairpersons to hand over to the heads of local government administrations in their respective areas on Monday. However, the state assembly, in its letter to the governor, argued that the Supreme Court's 2023 judgment on Local Government Autonomy prohibits the running of local governments by heads of local government administrations
