KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The ringgit opened flat today against the US dollar ahead of the Bank Negara Malaysia Monetary Policy Committee meeting scheduled this week although demand for the greenback remained strong due to its safe-haven status, an analyst said.
Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit was expected to remain stable at around RM4.40 today. “The negative real rate of interest at the moment could motivate BNM to raise the OPR in order to incentivise savers to place their savings in bank deposits and to avoid excessive risk-taking behaviour,” he told Bernama.
