Double world champion warmed up for his tilt at Olympic glory to claim the title for the third time
Rhys McClenaghan has once again clinched the European gymnastics title in Italy, successfully defending his crown.
The double world champion, gearing up for his shot at Olympic glory, delivered an outstanding performance on the Pommel Horse to secure the title for the third time since first winning it in 2018. The County Down gymnast's routine earned him a score of 15.300 in Rimini, putting him ahead in the event and surpassing the next best score of 14.933. A flawless dismount put him ahead of his closest competitor, Loran De Munck from the Netherlands. Marios Georgiou from Cyprus secured third place. This performance is likely to be his last competitive appearance before the Paris Games this summer, reports the Irish Mirror.
McClenaghan, aged 24, won the title in Antalya last year. Despite a surprising failure to reach the World Cup final in Baku last month, a third-place finish in Doha last week had set him back on course for the Europeans.
