The return of workers to the office has stalled in the last month, with employees opting to stay at home.
Two years after the pandemic began, many offices remain largely empty. And in Canberra, the occupancy rate dropped substantially last month, from 60 per cent to 53 per cent. The reason for people working from home has changed dramatically in the past year. In June 2021, most people were staying away from the CBD because of lockdowns and other public health restrictions.
Now it seems workers have developed a taste for staying in their trackies and skipping the commute altogether. Fewer than ten per cent of workers cite safety fears or public transport capacity as their motivation for staying at home. And most workers don't expect a change any time soon. More than three-quarters believe normal office occupancy levels won't return for more than three months.
"I don't think these figures are a reflection of workers not wanting to be in the office, but rather a reflection of people being forced to stay home for a range of reasons, whether it be to care for sick kids, rest themselves or to avoid dangerous weather."READ MORE:
