Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, have called on Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to look into the problem of refuse being dumped on the streets.
It was observed that streets such as Oja Oba, Oba Adesida Road, Oyemekun Road, Arakale and Ondo Road, among others, were littered with heaps of refuse as the collectors had refused to work for the past four days.
She said, “We have to beg the government to do something about the refuse; this is an eyesore in the state capital. The odour from the refuse dumped in front of my house is offensive; we can’t breathe fresh air in our house since yesterday . He stated, “I think the government should respond to the demands of the contractor, because for the past four days, the refuse has not been evacuated. It is disgusting seeing huge heaps of refuse everywhere on the streets of Akure, the seat of the state government.
A top official of the Ondo State Ministry of Environment, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to our correspondent on Wednesday that the contractor was being owed a huge amount of money, addng that that was why the company suspended its services.
