The California Democrat praised President Joe Biden’s legacy in his statement but said, “Our nation is at a crossroads.”
The announcement by Schiff, who is running for US Senate in California, makes him the first Democrat to urge Biden to step aside since theNational Politics |Biden is trying to sharpen the choice voters face in November as Republicans meet in Milwaukee
“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch. And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election,” Schiff said in a statement. The California Democrat served as an impeachment manager during one of Trump’s impeachments and has been one of the sharpest critics of the former president.“A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November,” he continued.
