As food costs continue to rise, a federal agency says it supports removing "best-before" dates from packaging.
The agency is reviewing the decades-old federal law that mandates labels on food with a shelf life of less than 90 days.
Food prices have risen year over year and continue to outpace general inflation, according to figures released by Statistics Canada last month. The cost of meat like beef and chicken has jumped by 12% and 9% respectively, while prices for ham and bacon actually fell by 6%.In a June report, the agriculture committee said regulators should “address food waste by investigating how the elimination of ‘best-before’ dates on foods would impact Canadians.”“The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Department of Health are working together to improve consumer education related to date labelling on pre-packaged foods,” it wrote.
“The Agency will continue updating its website to better educate consumers on ‘best-before’ dates and to clarify they are an indicator of a food’s freshness and quality, not safety. It will also update the analysis related to possible regulatory changes based on feedback from a targeted Health Canada questionnaire on potential food regulatory initiatives, which includes questions on stakeholders’ perception of ‘best-before’ dates.
