KOTA KINABALU: The red tide bloom in Sabah looks to have subsided for now.

Sabah Fisheries Department director Azhar Kassim said that the weekly samples taken of cockles and other shellfish from waters off Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran found that the red tide reading is below the danger level.

He said the phenomenon, which is caused by an increase in the population of certain types of algae - Margalefidinium polykrikoides and Pyrodinium bahamense algae, can produce harmful toxins that affect marine life and human health.
