Durham Region officials are giving the go-ahead for crews to continue re-paving Newtonville Road using recycled materials.Paving will continue in the near future.Clarington resident reported finding syringes, batteries and metalsThe road base will mainly be made of sand and aggregate, but will also include recycled glass, plastics and polyethylene terephthalate fibres. However, the use of recycled glass has proven controversial, since it inevitably includes a small amount of non-glass material.
“Processing of recycled glass cannot eliminate all non-glass material or odours,” they said, arguing that any smells will disperse once the road is fully constructed.Laboratory testing suggests if any substances do leach into the environment through rainwater or runoff, they would be non-toxic.
